During the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE-International) and UNEP conference in Nairobi, together with others, I visited a school in one of the slums of Nairobi. It was a special experience. Thousands of shacks built from corrugated iron plates and wooden planks, dirt roads, everything for sale and everyone left to their own devices. The residents try to find work in the tourist industry, shops and as domestic help. The slum has its own economy and children attend school, in as far as that is possible. The teachers earn very low wages, a number of children are unable to pay the low school fees and the school lacks every imaginable resource.
With the FEE Donation Shop we are drawing attention to projects in order to raise money to allow these children to go to school. The amounts involved are relatively small but for the locals they are considerable.
